Neutron NDE & Radiography
Seeing what X-rays cannot — non-destructive evaluation of aerospace composites, EV batteries, and advanced materials.
The Challenge
Seeing What X-Rays Cannot
X-ray inspection is the workhorse of industrial non-destructive evaluation — but it has a fundamental blind spot. X-rays are attenuated by electron density, making them excellent for imaging metals but poor at revealing light elements like hydrogen, lithium, carbon, and adhesives embedded within dense structures. This matters critically for aerospace composites (CFRP with hidden delaminations), EV battery cells (lithium distribution and electrolyte uniformity), and sealed defence assemblies where disassembly is not an option.
Our Approach
Neutron Beams for Advanced Materials Inspection
ASPL Fusion provides neutron NDE and radiography services using the same accelerator that powers our BNCT cancer therapy — a dual-use platform. Neutrons interact with atomic nuclei rather than electrons, giving them complementary sensitivity to X-rays: they penetrate heavy metals easily while being strongly attenuated by light elements.
Our knowledge graph covers 31 published papers on neutron radiography applications, informing our beam optimisation for industrial imaging.
Why It Matters
Key Benefits
Complementary to X-Ray
Neutrons see light elements (H, Li, C, adhesives) inside dense metals — detecting flaws that X-ray inspection fundamentally cannot reveal.
Non-Destructive
Components are inspected without disassembly, cutting, or contact — preserving expensive aerospace parts, sealed batteries, and classified assemblies.
Dual-Use Facility
NDE services operate on the same accelerator as BNCT therapy during off-peak hours, generating revenue with zero incremental capital expenditure.
